Hockey East final about to get underway

By Nathan White

All set up here at Boston Garden for the Hockey East championship game between the University of Maine Black Bears and the Boston College Eagles.

Maine came out flying Friday night and took a 3-0 lead on the way to a 5-2 win over the Boston University Terriers. BU came back to make it 3-2 in a strange third period, which “featured” a video review that took about 10 minutes, but resulted in a goal for Vinny Saponari to make it 3-2 with 3:47 to go.

BU got a brief lift from the goal, and Ross Gaudet had a chance to tie it with a full head of steam on a breakaway with three minutes to go, but Maine goalie Dave Wilson kicked out the right pad to stop him. On the next shift, David deKastrozza unloaded a one-timer from the left wing to make it 4-2 at 17:56, then captain Tanner House added an empty-netter 12 seconds later to ice it. Wilson, thrust into duty due to an injury to starter Scott Darling, finished with 35 saves for the win on his 25th birthday.
